What is tantalum?
Tantalum is a dense, ductile refractory metal. Its oxide film makes it almost inert to hydrochloric, nitric and sulphuric acids, even hot and concentrated, which is why it is often called "glass-like" in corrosion resistance. Because it is costly, it is usually used as thin sheet for linings, patches and sheaths rather than as solid parts.

Why is tantalum used as a lining instead of solid parts?
Tantalum is expensive and dense. A thin lining or sheath gives its corrosion resistance at a fraction of the cost of solid metal.
Is tantalum resistant to hydrofluoric acid?
No. Tantalum is attacked by hydrofluoric acid, fluorides and strong hot alkalis. For HF service consider Monel 400.
